The Quran text

The Arabic text is the Uthmani edition of the Tanzil Project, downloaded directly from tanzil.net rather than through an intermediary. Tanzil's permission allows verbatim copies and forbids changing the text, on condition that the source is clearly indicated and a link is made to tanzil.net. The app does exactly that on its Sources screen, and the text is not edited anywhere in the app.

Translations

The 18 translations are distributed by alquran.cloud, whose terms state that translations are contributed by their rights-holders or taken from public-domain editions, and ask that a republished translation credit its translator by name. The app credits every translator by name and shows the edition identifier, so you can tell exactly which edition you are reading.

Transliteration

The English transliteration and the Turkish one (Muhammet Abay) come from alquran.cloud. The transliterations for the other 19 languages are ours: a rule-based re-spelling of the English transliteration using each language's own letter values. It is spelling, not translation — the same sounds written with different letters.

Recitation

The recitation is Mishari Rashid al-`Afasy, with per-verse timing data served by alquran.cloud. Audio is streamed from the provider; it is not redistributed by us.

What we made, and how you may use it

Two things in this app are our own work: the rule-based transliteration for 19 languages, and the passage summaries and topic index. We release both under CC BY 4.0 — use them anywhere, including commercially, as long as you credit us.

Attribution that satisfies the licence:

One honest limit. Our transliteration rules are ours, but they are applied to the English transliteration distributed by alquran.cloud, so the output is a derivative of that text and we cannot grant you rights over the base we did not produce. The rules themselves, and the passage summaries, are unencumbered. The summaries were written with AI and have not been reviewed by a scholar; the transliterations have not been reviewed by native speakers, and outside the Latin script they are approximate.
